BEACHES

Cornwall’s endless coastline offers hundreds of beaches, the North coast has more sand dunes and crashing waves, ideal for surfing, body boarding and kite surfing. The South coast offers a softer less busy experience, with a mix of sand and pebbles, perfect for beach combers, rock pools and more leisurely water sports, such as paddle boarding, kayaking and sailing.  Some of Abigail and Jeremy favourite beaches close to Lynwood House are Carne Beach near Veryan, and Pendower, which when the tide is out join together creating a long stretch of sandy beach. Porthcurnick just along from Portscatho is not far either, famous for the Hidden Hut, which is set on the cliff just above. In the other direction Porthluney beach at Caerhays along with Portholland to the west of it and  Gorran Haven Beach to the east is some of their regular guests favourite.

SHOPPING

If you are in need of a bit of retail therapy, Truro is 15 minutes away and has all the usual high street shops. Though if you would like something a bit more unique or something to remember your holidays by, the sea side villages such as St Mawes, Portscatho and Mevagissey are all 15-20 minutes away, or 40 minutes up the coast there is Fowey.

For food shopping, for your supplies for the week or daily picnics there is a great local shop in the village as well as Beckoffi coffee shop, with home made cakes and delicious savoury bits. For larger shops Truro has all the large supermarkets as well as a Cornish Food Hall inside Waitrose. or while you are out for the day around the Roseland and surrounding area you have The Thirthea Co at Gerrans, near Towan beach, Caerhays Beach cafe, Renwicks Cafe at St Just in Roseland church, the Hidden Hut at Porthcurnic beach, Curgurrell Farm Shop, near Pendower and Mr Scorse Gourmet Deli and Wine in St Mawes, famous for his crab sandwiches!

ACTIVITIES

Now this is really what your holiday should be all about! Whether you are wanting to go for long walks, spend the day on the water, cycle around Cornwall or visit some of Cornwall’s attractions, Visit Cornwall can help you plan your activities or below are some more helpful links.

Bicycling

For the more experienced cyclists there are lots of Cycle Route throughout Cornwall, but for an enjoyable day out for all the family, Abigail and Jeremy would recommend the following:

Pentewan Valley  – with a tranquil cycle along the river towards St Austell.

Camel Valley Trail – from Wadebridge to Padstow along the Camel Estuary.

Walking

Click here for a comprehensive walking web page.

Or on rainy days:

National Maritime Museum, Eden Project, or some of the National Trust Gardens also have houses you can visit and in the spring and summer you can visit Caerhays Castle.

Sailing

Serious sailors will tell you that the sailing and boating around the Helford River and the Fal Estuary is second to none. If you want to learn ‘how to’ then we can personally recommend the tuition at: The St Mawes Sailing club and Mylor Sailing School.

If you have your own boat then you can launch off several of the local beaches in and around St Mawes.

Surfing & Windsurfing

Fistral Beach near Newquay is where it all happens if you are really keen, and it is only half an hour’s drive away. See where else you can surf around Cornwall.

Click here for information on windsurfing in Cornwall, and for some of you who like an adrenaline rush don’t miss out on the Extreme Sports Academy in, across Cornwall.

Paddle Boarding

If you are wanting to explore the Roseland from the sea why not try out Paddle Boarding, a great way to see those areas no car to get to or even most boats. A great work out too.

PUBS, RESTAURANTS & TAKEAWAYS

breakfast_terrace

You will not go hungry on your holiday, that we can guarantee! There is something to suit every taste, from village pubs with excellent food, simple cafés and beach huts for a quick snack and Michelin started restaurants for the special night out.

For local places that Abigail and Jeremy would recommend please see below: Please make sure to check opening times and to book especially in the busy times of the season. (Not in any particular order).

The King’s Arms in Tregony, five minutes walk up the hill it is the perfect place to go for a meal after a long journey. Friendly village atmosphere, good for all the family. With new owners this winter. Closed Mondays.

The Hawkins Arms, a locals pub, located in Probus across the bridge. Closed Mondays and Tuesday lunch.

The Roseland Inn, a lovely country pub, 15 minutes drive from Tregony. Closed on Monday and Tuesday.

Polgooth Inn, a little further away in Polgooth, heading out of the top of Tregony. This is a very busy country pub, their huge veg garden located just below the beer garden, supplies them with beautiful home grown produce. Open everyday.

The New Inn, a country pub set in the middle of the pretty village of Veryan, only 10 minutes drive away. Recently had new owners. Open everyday.

The Plume of Feathers, a 15 minutes drive to the beautiful seaside village of Portcatho. Good for all the family. A busy village pub, open all day everyday. Parking in the summer especially can be very busy, it may be easier to park half way up the hill and walk down.

The Wheel Inn, just up the road towards Truro in Tresillian, a very small friendly Cornish pub. Closed on Mondays.

The Heron Inn, a beautiful busy pub with a picturesque setting on the Estuary at Malpas. Open every day. The parking can be a little tricky and you may have to park along the road and have a short walk to the pub, so remember to leave enough time so as not to miss your booking.

For alternatives to Pub food, there are lots more place in Truro, St Mawes, Falmouth, Mevagissey, Charlestown and Fowey to name a few.  Some Abigail and Jeremy would recommend would be:

Bangin Burgers and Kebabs, located on Back Lane at the top of Tregony, open on Thursday 6pm – 9pm, Saturday 5pm – 9pm and Sunday 6pm – 9pm. Freshly cooked to order, very hearty and tasty. While you wait for your order The Sports and Social Club attached is very welcoming for a drink, non member welcome, with a large seating area outside too, perfect on a summers evening. Abigail and Jeremy would also recommend trying the locally distilled Rockpool Gin served at the club, that is if you like a Gin and Tonic!

Fish and Chip and Pizza Van in Tregony Square on a Friday evening, served between 5pm to 7pm.

Chinese Lantern, in Probus, TR2 4JN, 01726 337550, pick up only.

Mevagissey Spice, in Mevagissey, eat in or takeway. They don’t serve alcohol but you can take your own, it is great food and very reasonably prices.

Tandoori, on Lemon Street in Truro, eat in or take away. A delicious curry though a little on the pricey side.

The Cornish Italian, just up the road at Chenoweth business park, all the flavours of Italy.

And finally for somewhere for a special occasion there is:

Tresanton in St Mawes (pictured above).  For terrific food and stunning views over the harbour.  Morning coffee and afternoon tea recommended.

The Nare near Veryan, with its stunning location above Carne beach it can be recommended for any time of day, with coffee or lunch in the quarterdeck or a sit down meal in the restaurant itself.

Or for a little further away:

Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant in Padstow.  Fantastic food and a beautiful seaside harbour to visit.

Paul Ainsworth’s No. 6, Padstow.

Nathan Outlaw, Port Isaac

CULTURE

Cinema

We hope it won’t be wet weather but just in case the Roseland receives a shower or two and you want to hide in the cinema the Truro Plaza may be an ideal spot in which to shelter.

Theatre

If you drive to Penzance don’t leave without visiting the famous Minack Theatre.  Quite apart from watching great theatre, the view is simply breath-taking – and there are gardens and cafes to enjoy – well worth a trip.

Truro also has its very own theatre at the Hall for Cornwall, with so many fantastic shows all year round.
